ROI (return on investment) is what you receive from something you have purchased. Even if you are planning to move in a couple of years you could enjoy an addition, remodel, a new garage or shed or even a back patio for virtually nothing until the time came to sell your home. When considering ROI you have to look at your neighborhood and be sure you do not over do your project and at the same time you need to make sure that you do enough. If your home is missing something that all of your neighbors have that could be a good investment. Keep in mind that more money spent is not always a higher ROI. Sometimes just a minor remodel could bring a higher ROI.
